Did you know orthodontics can actually help some kids sleep and breathe better, in addition to straightening teeth?! 😴
What are signs of pediatric sleep apnea?
Sleep is essential for growing kids — it helps with everything from focus and behavior to physical development. But some children have trouble breathing while they rest, often due to a narrowed airway. This can lead to snoring, mouth breathing, tooth grinding, restless nights, or even daytime tiredness- all signs of possible pediatric sleep apnea.
What are possible causes of pediatric sleep apnea?
There are lots of possible causes of pediatric sleep apnea. Sometimes, it’s enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which can be removed to provide relief. Sometimes, it’s tongue posture. Sometimes, pediatric sleep apnea can be caused by how the jaws and teeth are shaped. In this scenario- orthodontics can help!
How can an expander help?
Early treatment (often starting around age 7-8) with an expander can widen the upper jaw, which in turn widens the airway, improving airflow and helping kids breathe easier at night. A good night’s sleep means better focus, energy, and mood — and we love helping kids feel their best from the inside out. 💫
Evaluation and diagnosis of pediatric sleep apnea
If your child snores, breathes through their mouth, or seems tired even after sleeping all night, it might be worth having their airway and bite checked at an airway-aware orthodontic office like Best Orthodontics.
Note: At our office, we will not formally diagnose sleep apnea, but we can review how orthodontics may be able to help, and refer to a sleep specialist as needed.
